It took humans, millions of years to learn how to use a hammer.

70,000 years ago the cognitive revolution happened and the human domination of all other species accelerated to destructive levels.

The internet is just 43 years old and has evolved at staggering speed.  Humans are simply not able to evolve at the same pace.  Our in-built emotional and intellectual mechanism are open to manipulation.

The dopamine hit from consumption is exploited in this modern world and we no longer need to just physically consume.
